Getting customers to reuse and reduce

In further affirming our commitment to sustainability and reducing plastic waste to the environment, we distributed 2,000 reusable bags to customers of Lotus’s Kepong on the weekend of 3rd and 4th April 2021. This was also a tie-in with the launch of Lotus’s Kepong on 31 March 2021.

To attract customers, we dressed up the promoters with discarded single-use plastic bags as well as the iconic orange floatie to signify the amount of single-use plastic that are discarded into the seas each year and how detrimental it is to marine life. Data from the International Union for Conservation of Nature noted that at least eight million tons of plastic end up in our oceans every year. Marine life then ingests or is entangled by the plastic waste, which causes severe injuries and deaths.

Though customers were initially attracted to the promoters’ costumes, they left with a Lotus’s reusable bag when they engage with the promoters and the knowledge that they can make a difference if they were to diligently and consistently bring their own reusable bags while shopping in our stores and everywhere else.
